Colposcopy

You Are Here: Home / Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a fancy medical term for looking at the cervix through a microscope. When a patient has an abnormal pap smear, the next step is colposcopy. The patient comes into the office and I take a closer look at the cervix through the colposcope. The procedure is relatively painless and takes about 15 minutes. Its basically like doing a long (15 minute) pap smear. If I see any areas on the cervix that are suspicious for PRE-cancerous changes, I will take a small biopsy. The biopsy is very small and is about the size of HALF of a grain of rice (if that). This test is better than a pap smear and offers more information. The results are usually back in one week. Further treatment is usually not necessary. If you have any other questions, please email or call me anytime.
