Constipation during during pregnancy is very common. Many women suffer from constipation and it may become worse during pregnancy. Increased levels of a hormone called Progesterone during pregnancy may worsen constipation. The best medicine is prevention. The following suggestions may help prevent constipation:

1) Increase your water intake. Drink at least 8 glasses of fluids per day
2) A daily fiber supplement (Metamucil) may also help prevent constipation
3) Fibercon pills taken three times daily. This can be bought over-the-counter
4) Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables (natural fiber)

If you get constipated and need immediate relief, the following may help:

1) Milk of magnesia
2) Miralax
3) Fleet enema
